Salvador!

Soterpolis

Ai!
Cismado a ver o pôr-do-sol –
O astro rei sobre o Atlântico a brilhar
Incendiando o horizonte de arrebol.

Que vontade de beijar-te as nuas faces!
Virgem linda de homéricos contos...
E o desejo de ao cair da tarde
Na Piedade alimentar os pombos
Sentado à praça a contemplar a vida.

Que saudade de sentir a brisa
Aos pés do Cristo de marmórea vida;
De ver as ondas a beijar-te as Barras.
Do requebro tépido te tuas meninas.

Sim! Eu quero descer a Contorno p’ra admirar a vista –
Ver o Solar, o Comércio, a Marina...
Não me admiras seres do moribundo a tisana –
O sacrário altivo da beleza hispana.

Nos versos de Caymmi és bondosa Circes
Por quem se apaixona o solitário viajor –
És Tebas de cidério fulgor-
És de Vênus o amado Anquices
A dormir ao som do sublime flautim.

Lembro ainda do perfume das escadarias do Bonfim
A populaça em rugidora animação
Lavando as ruas desde a Conceição –

Ai! Meu brasílio Taj Mahal
Tens jardins eternamente floridos
Onde libram as borboletas – onde crescem etéreos lírios.
São as Índias – de Cabral.
São os lauréis – da criação de Tupã.

Que saudades de Itapuã!
Quero rolar sobre as dunas do Abaeté
Dançar o Alegretto ao som do oboé;

Brilhas com a pira reluzente de Pirajá;
Tens Tritão a beijar teus pés.

A multidão borbulhando nas Galés -
Se derramando pela rua Chile.
 -Em meio ao povo negras Nefertites
Vão adorar-te na praça da Sé.

Sobem, descem ladeiras de enegrecidas pedras –
Diamantes brutos a cobrir o Pelourinho
 - Oásis plácido onde Zumbi fez seu ninho –
Terreiro sacro d’onde se ergue a Irmandade.

Seu povo heróico traz no peito a Liberdade
- São valentes guerreiros, não covardes! -

Ouvir entre as árvores os bandos a chilrear;
Ver das acácias as flores vermelhas, enrubescendo a verde folhagem.

Quero passear na Boa Viagem
No dia primeiro de janeiro;
Dançar na Avenida em fevereiro;
Contemplar o horizonte na praça Castro Alves.

Ah! Salvador, minha Salvador!
Nem Homero, nem Byron, nem Camões,
Nem os poetas do mundo inteiro,
Saberiam expressar as emoções

Para quem tocam as liras os anjos;
Por quem Caetano se derrama em cantos.

Ai! Salvador, minha Salvador querida!
Se soubesses o quanto sinto tua falta...
 - Sou como um nauta ao espaço singrando –
Pedirias a Deus que a ti me desse de volta;

Soterpolis - English version

Ah! How I miss my land!
How I miss my dear Salvador!
The days when I sat at the pier of Humaitá
Adrift seeing the sunset –
The king star, an splendor o’er the Atlantic,
Blazing the horizon with hues of dusk.

What a crave to kiss thy nude faces,
beautiful virgin of Homeric tales
And what a desire to feed the pigeons
When night came o’er Piedade square
While I was set, contemplating life, pensive.

How I miss feeling the breeze
At the feet of the granite Christ;
Seeing the waves kissing the shores of Barra,
And the sensual walking of thy girls.
I hanker to feel the strong smell of the acarajé
At the beautiful baianas stands.
To contemplate São Marcelo fort and the fishermen tents
From the Square, at the entrance of the Elevator
- the amazing hill of the two cities -
And be astonished by thy people and their dance
bathed by Dinamenes.
Thou art Aphrodite – the love of Praxiteles.

Yes! I want to see the landscape as I walk down Contorno Avenue,
See the Solar, Comércio, the Marina, all the town
And at the background, far flung, Itapagipe shining –
Like the captivating grin of a boy
Filling the air with grace – covering with blissful light the seas and terraces –
Itaparica comes to worship thee!
My so lo'ed city, land of my sweet infancy!
It’s no surprise that thou art the tisane
The proud sacrarium of Latin beauty.

In the verses of Caymmi thou art sweet Circes
For whom the lonely voyageur falls –
Thou art Thebes of sidereal light –
Thou art of Venus the beloved Anquices
Sleeping at the music of the flute at night.

I recall the perfume at the stairs of the church of Bonfim
The throng in a reverie
Washing the streets nearby Conceição cathedral –
Lighting the houses, making in Ribeira a great carnival.

Ah! My Brazilian Taj Mahal
Thou hast eternally flowering gardens
Where the butterflies fly – where ethereal lilies grow.
They are the Indias – of Cabral.
They are the laurels – of the creation of Tupã.

How I miss Itapuã!
I want to cartwheel on the dunes of Abaeté,
Dance the allegretto at the sound of the oboe;
Have my hands caressed in the plumes of a heron.

Thou hast in Campo Grande the Grace and the Victory
- an indian sculpted o’er a pillar -
Thou shinest with the shining fire of Pirajá
Thou hast Triton kissing thy feet.

The multitude going down the Galés –
Crowding Rua Chile.
- Among the people black Nefertitis
Will worship thee at the Sé Square.

They go up and down the seared stones –
Unwrought diamonds covering Pelourinho paths
- Idyllic oasis where Zumbi made his dwelling - Sacred site where the fraternity raises.

Thine heroic people bring on the chest Liberty girded
- They’re brave warriors, not feeble!
They bring the loud shout of the Aflitos from innermost parts
Who at the sound of the beautiful drums
Make thy green pastures e'en greener.

How do I miss the calmness of Stela Maris!
The coconuts in Jardim de Allah!
I miss sitting on the meadow at Piatã beach
Listening to the birds in the trees cheering
Seeing the red flowers of the acacia, making the foliage crimson.

I want in Boa Viagem to promenade
At the dawn of January the first;
Dance on the Avenida in February;
From Castro Alves Square contemplate the horizon, the statuary .

Ah! Salvador, my Salvador!
Neither Homer, or Camões, or Byron, or
Even all the poets in the world,
Would know to word how nice
‘Tis walking freely through Dendezeiros.
They wouldn’t even translate what it is to be thine.

Who hath not seen Pituba at dawn
Being enrapted by the roaring of the waves?
Who hath not sat at Mont Serrat
To watch the sea at sunset shades –
Loving thee as the Bard the Black Lady?

Who’s seen such a beauty shall it never forsake!
Co'ered in jewels thou art the mistress of fires –
For whom the angel play lyres;
For whom Caetano maketh songs.

Ah! Salvador, Salvador my dearest!
If thou knowest I miss thee so much …
- I’m like the sailor o'er the sea -
Thou wouldest ask God to give me back unto thee;
Wouldest pray Heaven to wipe my tears from me.
